The Philadelphia Flyers continue to make headlines. Just 4 days after locking up Wayne Simmonds with a 6-year extension, the Flyers have done the exact same with Scott Hartnell according to inside reporter Anthony SanFilippo (@AnthonySan37).

"We are pleased to announce that we have agreed with Scott on a multi-year extension," Flyers GM Paul Holmgren said. "Scott has been a very good player for us over the last five seasons and we look forward to many more good years to come." - Per

Renaud Lavoie (@RenLavoieRDS) has reported that Hartnell will make an average of $4.75 million per season, bringing the total value of the 6-year deal to $28.5 million. He is currently making $4.2 million on his current deal with the Flyers.

Hartnell was heading into the final year of his 6-year, $25.2 million contract and wasn't planning on going anywhere after his current deal was up. In an interview with, Hartnell sounded very excited to have signed a new deal.

I am very happy to be staying in Philly to continue my career playing in front of the best fans in the NHL," Hartnell told said. "I would like to thank [Flyers chairman Ed] Snider and the entire Flyers organization."

Hartnell, 30, is coming off the best season of his career. Playing in all 82 games, the Regina, SK native notched a total of 67 points this past season, scoring 37 goals and adding 30 assists.

16 of those 37 goals came while on the powerplay, which was good enough to rank him 2nd in the league for most powerplay goals, just behind James Neal of the Penguins whom scored 18 goals while on the man-advantage.

Along with the points, came a +19 rating and 136 penalty minutes. Although he was already known as a great defensive player, Hartnell really stepped it up this year in the defensive end. Causing many turnovers and using his body to knock players off the puck, Hartnell became one of the Flyers best 2-way players this past season.

Originally drafted #6 overall by the Nashville Predators in the 2000 NHL Draft, Hartnell was traded along with teammate Kimmo Timonen to Philadelphia in the summer of 2007 in exchange for a 2007 1st round draft pick.

In 843 career NHL games, Hartnell has registered 222 goals and 252 assists for 474 points to go along with 1,279 penalty minutes and a +59 rating while playing for both the Predators and Flyers.
