The Detroit Red Wings have locked up their captain for one more year. Nicklas Lidstrom the long time captain of the Red Wings, told Ken Holland and his staff that he will return for a 20th NHL season. Lidstrom has had a historic career and ranks at the top of many Red Wings all time records. Lidstrom agreed to a 1 year, $6.2 million deal. Lidstrom’s decision to return to the Wings for another season provides the Wings with more stability on the back end and solid leadership by the veteran captain. Lidstrom will definitely be looking to go out in style and win the Stanley Cup for the fifth time in his career. The Red Wings needed their captain to return for another season. After veteran defenseman Brian Rafalski announced his retirement just last month, everything was looking as if it was going to go bad for the Wings. The Wings definitely need to improve their team this offseason. Maybe signing a few defenseman to strengthen the back end even more would help. Up front the Wings don’t need to change much. They have some of the best forwards in the league. The Wings will be looking for more production out of their key role players such as Jiri Hudler, Daniel Cleary, and Johan Franzen. Overall, I can definitely see the Wings being major contenders this upcoming season. If the Red Wings can remain consistent and get continuous production out of all their offensive superstars, they will definitely have a shot at bringing the Stanley Cup back to Detroit. The Red Wings last won the cup in 2008 when they beat the Pittsburgh Penguins in 6 games. Lidstrom’s signing has definitely calmed down many Red Wings fans. Many were worried that this would be the point where everything goes down hill for the Wings. As of right now, the attitude has changed and many consider Detroit to be serious contenders once again in the Western Conference. I would like to congratulate Nicklas Lidstrom on a great career and I wish him and the Red Wings the best this upcoming season. I am sure Wings fans will not be disappointed and they will see their Red Wings, led by Nick Lidstrom fight until the very end to try and bring the Stanley Cup back to Detroit.
