Why the Leafs have picked up Trade Talks regarding a Starting Goaltender
Brian Burkes trade doors have open. The Minnesota Wild have placed starting goaltender Niklas Backstrom on the trade Market.
The Leafs, who have been shopping for that starting goalie since season end have been on the phone with many teams regarding the availability of their starting goaltenders. The list has been cut down to Jonathan Bernier from the Kings, Miikka Kiprusoff from the Flames, Roberto Luongo from the Canucks, Steve Mason from the Blue Jackets and Niklas Backstrom from the Wild.
The Kings are sceptacle about trading Bernier who is the backup to star goaltender Jonathan Quick who may be sidelined for the start of the season. L.A. GM Dean Lombardi sent out a statement saying, "we would like to keep Bernier on roster to keep depth behind Quick". Trade talks have cooled down between the Kings and Leafs, also the Canucks and Leafs regarding goaltender Roberto Luongo. The Flordia Panthers are the front runners for Luongo as of right now, but don't count out the Leafs.
Jay Feaster, GM of the Flames and Brian Burke GM of the Leafs are only in talks regarding Kiprusoff but a trade may be a possiblility. As of right now, Backstrom is the front runner for the Leafs.
If Burke does not make a trade happen by the end of the offseason, the Leafs will have no choice other to start James Reimer and sign a veteran goaltender out of free agency. The top choice for the Leafs to sign is Dwayne Roloson, former Lightning starter.
